The Indo-US Symposium on Human Genetic Disorders of Prenatal and
Postnatal Growth and the Fourth Annual Meeting of the Society for Indian
Academy of Medical Genetics were held in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on
8th and 9th December, 2017. The symposium and conference were
organized by Dr Sankar VH, Additional Professor & Geneticist, Department
of Pediatrics, SAT Hospital, Government Medical College,
Thiruvananthapuram, in association with SIAMG. The Principal Investigator
from the US for this joint Indo-US collaboration was Dr Maximilian Muenke
from the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of
Health, USA. Two pre-conference workshops were conducted on 7th
December 2017 on "Application of Genetic Tests in Clinical Practice" and
"Bioinformatics Workshop on the UCSC Genome Browser" and there was a
CME on "Treatment of Genetic Disorders" on 10th December, 2017.
The conference brought together eminent clinicians and scientists from India and the US to deliberate on various aspects of growth disorders. The highlights of the meeting included the Dr SS Agarwal Oration by Dr Leslie G Biesecker, Senior Investigator and Chief of the Medical Genomics and Metabolic Genetics Branch and Head of the Clinical Genomics Section of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), USA; the Dr IC Verma Outstanding Researcher Award lecture by Dr Madhulika Kabra, Genetics Unit, Department of Pediatrics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi; and presentation of the Dr SS Agarwal Young Scientist Award to Dr Suraj S Nongmaithem from Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad for his GWAS study on population-specific new regulatory variants in FUT6 associated with plasma B12 concentrations, under the mentorship of Dr G R Chandak. There were a number of interesting free papers as well as posters presented by young medical geneticists. The scientific content of the conference was greatly appreciated by all attendees. |
