I am thankful to Dr.Shagun and SIAMG- GENZYME for this wonderful opportunity. I am grateful to Dr. Sumita Danda and Dr.Gautham Arunachal for their valuable guidance throughout the course.
During Genetic counselling sessions, I felt helpful in sharing the pain of parents and giving hope for subsequent healthy pregnancies. This training stimulated me to work for the needy. I acquired basic skills like interpreting neurochemical diagnostic results and metabolic errors. It has strengthened my confidence in approaching genetic disorders. I have carried out Out-patient and In-patient referals with a sense of responsibility. I also sought every oppurtunity to interact with junior and senior collegues to further my learning process by attending various academic activities like clinical meetings, group discussions and interdepartmental debates.
This training helped me to develop the confidence and skills in managing varied genetic disorders. It also enhanced my acumen and readiness to handle difficult diagnostic situations demanding detailed analysis.
I developed the qualities of patience, hard work and perseverance during the training and sharpened my skills in effective counselling with honesty and empathy for the parents. I acquired the passion for genetics with human values of sharing the joy and pain of the parents being supportive to them even at odd times.

I consider myself fortunate for having had this opportunity for learning .The fellowship gave a better approach and insight into dealing with genetic diseases in both prenatal cases and children. The caseload in terms of OPD and the variety of cases was huge , as was the opportunity of working directly under the guidance of Dr Shubha R Phadke. The fellowship included the unique combination of hands on OPD, USG,Prenatal procedures like amnio, CVS ,IUT ,fetal autopsy, lab ( karyotyping, microarray,MLPA) and counselling part of the affected patients and parents. The knowledge gained is very useful in the field of fetal medicine and better equips a clinician in dealing with a case right from selecting the appropriate procedure till the counselling part.I would like to thank the SIAMG for making this a very positive experience. |

I am grateful to my institution - RRMCH, Bangalore and Dr.Adarsh, the HOD of Pediatrics, for having given me the permission to do this fellowship program. My heartfelt thanks to SIAMG-GENZYME for conducting this unique program which enriches medical knowledge and helps to gain experience in medical genetics.
I recently had an opportunity to attend the 14th ICMR medical genetics course which was a great experience, but my curiosity did not stop there ... At end of the course, I heard about the fellowship program. And hence, enrolled in it at NIMS, Hyderabad.
The NIMS medical genetic department has excellent and dedicated consultants - Dr. Prajnya and Dr. Shagun.
There is a diversity of cases presented to the OPD from the different parts of India. Many patients have visited many places to arrive at a diagnosis; this center helped those patients. With an advancing medical field in India, many investigations are now available. Interpretation of the investigation results make difference in the patient's demeanor.
Many cases which we might have read and seen in the textbook or have heard from colleagues, we get the opportunity to see on a first hand basis.
This course helps in the approach of rare diseases and of inherited diseases. It also teaches us the importance of premarital, prenatal and preimplantation diagnosis and newborn screening.
The learning process started from the first day, where there was importance of detailed history taking, careful examination and arriving at a probable diagnosis. The tough part initially was counseling the patient and trying to make them understand the disease. The treatment of many of these diseases are still in the research phase. These needed an extended counseling to patients. In this courses I got chance to take part in fetal autopsy and see the malformations, which I had only read about.
In addition to routine teaching while seeing the patient, there are case presentations, journal clubs and seminars. However it does not end here, telemedicine is done every month.
The course provided exposure to the lab at CDFD. Dr. Ashwin sir, helped me in the interpretation of investigation reports.
Two friendly residents- Dr. Karthik and Dr. Vijayalakshmi, also helped me a lot.
Overall it is great course, allowing me to take home many new concepts, knowledge and profound confidence. |
I plan to do more fetal autopsy and will continue to help pediatric patients especially the genetically based ones. |

This fellowship has been memorable.
The case load, rare diseases, observing different clues to syndromes, prenatal testing and the teaching by the consultants has been remarkable.
Genetics for me prior to this course was a sentence which we wrote in the opd case papers of patients "REFER TO HIGHER CENTRE FOR GENETIC EVALUATION".
Now I can go back to say I have tested the waters of this field , obviously not entirely, but atleast a bit.
Would recommend this fellowship to be of longer duration.
My Learning curve did experience an exponential rise.
|
Would want to explore this field further. |

It was indeed a great honour and opportunity bestowed on me by SIAMG-GENZYME to undergo fellowship training in the field of Medical Genetics at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, India. Medical genetics department at SGPGIMS provides a very pleasant and friendly learning environment where the rarest genetics problems are addressed.
Though the time spent at SGPGIMS was very short, every day was a new and exciting learning experience. The morning sessions, Journal club, paper reading, case discussions etc. were very informative. Not only did I learn to diagnose, plan and treat but also gained a lot of insight on approaching patients and their problems gently and methodically. I gained hands on experience in molecular genetics testing techniques and interpretation of the results.
I am extremely grateful to all the dedicated, talented and friendly members of the Medical Genetics department for all their significant contribution to my learning. My sincere gratitude to Dr. Shubha Phadke, Head of the Medical Genetics Department for her support and guidance. The department has all the potentials to continue to excel in the field of medical genetics.
I am also thankful to SIAMG Secretary Dr.Ashwin Dalal for timely help and Dr.Sumita Danda, Professor and Head of the department of Clinical Genetics, Christian Medical College, Vellore for her guidance & encouragement.

I would recommend it for any clinician who wants to improve his/her clinical skills and academics. The range of genetic conditions that I could see in the past 3 months has been simply amazing. This fellowship in clinical genetics gave me a birds eye view of what to expect from a career in medical genetics. Even if one is not interested in pursue a career in medical genetics, this fellowship helps you to refine and redefine your approach to inherited disorders. I believe this would be particularly useful to paediatricians, obstetricians, neurologists, endocrinologists and general physicians in their daily practice. |

The fellowship program was very useful. I had a great opportunity of working with Dr. Sankar and his excellent lab team. I have seen many rare interesting clinical cases in the genetic clinic. Also met with many difficult Counseling scenarios, antenatal cases, pre and post test counseling. As I have done fellowship in pediatric Genetics earlier, this training gave me an opportunity to have a hands on experience in Karyotyping, DNA isolation, PCR and in depth knowledge of mutation analysis by sequencing. Also I was able to clarify many of my lab related doubts with the excellent genetic lab team. I presented poster in "Manipal Genetics Update on Genetic Counseling ", March 3rd & 4th , 2017, which won the first prize. I am grateful to Genzyme, SIAMG for having given me this great opportunity. |
